The MSCONFIG utility is a very useful tool that you will find in the Control Panel. This utility will allow you to take charge of all the programs that are automatically starting up on your system. These programs will not only cause your boot time to be longer they will bog down the overall operation of your PC as they are running in the background.
Having and using a good anti-virus software is also important. Having a computer with adware, viruses or other malware installed is one of the biggest threats to the performance of the system. But performance is not the only threat these programs pose making the prevention of becoming infected a priority. Windows Defender is from Microsoft that combines an anti-virus program with a task and startup manager as well. This makes it easy to perform a lot of system maintenance right from one central location. Defender is available for Windows Vista and XP machines only.
As far as what affects system speed the registry is the number one culprit. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not provide a Registry tool. But there are many good one on the market including CCleaner.
